It's a Newton Utility
BooksOff can save your life from long long waiting time when you
do "Find All". It add a checkbox "Don't Search in Books" on Find
Dialog. Generally information you want to get exists on "Names",
"Notes", "To Do" or any application specific data, not on Digital
Books. BooksOff can skip searching in books, so you can get result
more faster. It's easy to turn off this function, so no probrem
when you really want to get information in the book.
Version 2.0 : Now it's auto part. There's no icon in extras
drawer. This is like Macintosh's INIT file.

Convert! for the Newton Messagepad v 2.0
Just as Newton is a replacement for your diary, Convert! is a replacement for
the conversion tables usually found at the front.
Convert! 2.0 allows the user to enter and quickly convert between 107 common
(and not so common) metric and imperial units. Once the value has been written
into a field Convert! automatically calculates the corresponding units in the
table. You can then simply overwrite any field with a new value and have the
whole table recalculate.
This new version includes:
* complete rewrite from the ground up, much more efficient use of memory
* user definable settings (US/UK volumes, result accuracy).
* supports "whole unzit conversions" ie 300.6 cm = 3.28 yards or 3 yards, 0 ft,
10.35ins
* 70 new conversions including Pressure,Energy,Time,Power,Velocity,Computing

Subject: RESEND of HeapIt 1.0 - Newton Memory Utility
Date: Mon, 7 Mar 1994 17:22:44 -0700 (MST)
I accidentally send HeapIt as an attachment with a MIME e-mail package.
I'm resending it with the text of the BinHex archive included directly in
the message.
< Overview >
HeapIt is a small utility for the Newton MessagePad that removes
InstallScripts from the system heap. The Newton OS leaves the install
scripts in the heap, even though they are only used once. We're not sure
why it does this, but if you have 10-20 apps installed, that's a lot of
heap space! HeapIt also provides a heap space display on the Card/Backup
slip and allows you to run HeapIt from there.

"Who is great and mighty fine? You can bet it's Jesse Devine!"
F E A T U R E S:
* PERSISTANCE: Kbd sticks on your button line next to the alphabet chooser
and the standard keyboard icon...WHEE!!!
* ICONIFICATION: The MinMax button will let you hide away the keyboard when
you don't need it and pop it back when you do. The MinMax button looks
like a little square attached to a bigger square. This is especially
convenient when the persistant icon is covered by an app.
* REMEMBERED LOCATIONS: The floating keyboard and icon locations are
remembered for consistancy. To move the keyboard or icon, drag the
border.
* POPUP EXTRAS: The Extras button which looks like a file folder will let you
access your applets and the builtin extras conserving screen space.
Just click for a list of applets or press and hold until you hear the
"poof" sound and release for the builtins and books.
* REPEATING KEYS: Delete, Space and the Left/Right keys all repeat after a
delay. Just keep holding the key to start multiple deletes, etc. If
you undo after this operation, >all< changes are restored!
* MULTIPLE KEYBOARDS: Current keyboards include punctuation, numeric elements
and the alphabet. To the right of the minimize button, the Keyboards
button leads you to a list of keyboard alternatives. Send in your
ideas for new keyboards. The keyboards button looks like a stack of
keyboards, a filing cabinet or a triple domino depending on the time
of day and degree of inebriation.
* TIMESTAMP: A special timestamp in the information [?] pane lets you
mark the date and time.
* DIRECT ACCESS TO STYLES: The Styles button, next to the folder, gives you
immediate access to the styles slip. Super convenient! The styles
button looks like a set of line widths with a check next to them.
* MOVEMENT AND EDIT KEYS: A standard palette appears next to the keyboard
supporting forward and backward delete, superbullet (bullet, return,
space), tab, space,. return, move left and move right.
* SELECT ALL: tap on any part of the text (get the cursor blinking in the
text, that is) then press the square "select all" button between the
left and right movement keys. All the text is selected. Perfect for
changing font for long meeting notes!
* KITCHEN SINK (forthcoming: version 0.999)
================================================================================
* RELEASE NOTES *
1.1 RELEASE NOTES
1. Persistant icon on the status line. (WHEE!!!)
2. By massive request, much bigger function keys on the right side of the keyboard.
3. ";" and bullet in punctuation replaced by < and > by popular request
4. Super-slimmed down number keyboard
5. Added new Modem, Unix and Task keyboards
6. Books now work and are under the standard apps rather than the builtins.
7. Added in "select all" option (little square) -- especially convenient
for changing fonts.
8. Time stamp fixed and is now in the [?] info box.
1.0 RELEASE NOTES
1. Added in forward delete
2. Added in time stamp
3. Added in Bullet "macro"
4. Reordered some of the standard keys
0.5 RELEASE NOTES
1. The return key points left rather than down as per standard keyboard.
2. The parentheses keys now work correctly in the numbers keyboard.
3. Delete, space and left/right now repeat after a delay.
4. Repeated deletes can be undone as one operation.
0.4 RELEASE NOTES
1. I figured out how to shrink protokeyboards (set saveBounds rather than
viewBounds) so the caret is now implemented.
2. You can move left and right (but not yet up and down) non-destructively. I
used Unicodes FS and GS but still haven't found the right ones for
the UP/DOWN...
3. Keyboards now include (a) standard (b) short movement/delete/etc (c)
numeric (d) alphabet. If you have ideas for others send 'em to me.
User custom kbds are still in the future.
4. The script "i" leads directly to the styles dialog.
5. Click on the folder pick from user applets. Press and hold on the folder,
releasing when you hear "poof" and you will get the builtins and
books.
6. Common keyboard functions: (tab, delete, left, right, space, return) have
their own palette area to the right of the keys.
7. The multiple keyboard icon has changed to "stack of keyboards". (Use your
imagination.
0.3 RELEASE NOTES
1. Multiple keyboards are supported, even if the alternate ones are pretty
dumb. The heavy [+] button gets you there. [CHANGED in 0.4 to the
keyboard stack]
2. Popup menus get you extra applets and builtins. The folder button goes to
user added apps, the file cabinet gets you the builtin ones [Changed
in 0.4].
3. Info box is no longer a popup but rather a floatnGo
0.2 RELEASE NOTES:
1. You can move the keyboard around the screen
2. You can "iconize" the keyboard (use the button in the upper left hand
corner)
3. You can move the icon around the screen. Both the position of the
keyboard and the icon are remembered.
4. I haven't figured out how to do popup stuff bigger than the parent window
so the info box ([?] key) is a stupid popup list. [Changed IN 0.3]
FORTHCOMING:
1. User definable keyboards & 'Macros'
2. Sound toggle and other prefs available from [?] info button
4. Moving up and down as well as left and right...(if possible)
5. Better keyboards and keyboard layouts. (Send in your ideas)
6. Cut/Copy/Paste
7. Multisized keyboards
8. Standard keyboard support
9. Shifting (rom_asciishift?)
10. "Dashboard" keyboard
KNOWN BUGS
1. The current keyboard is not checked in the popup list nor
is it remembered.
2. The order of punctuation is task oriented rather than
the standard qwerty keyboard.

Subject: NewtCase 0.9B - Newton Package Archiving Utility
Date: Mon, 30 May 1994 23:03:00 -0700 (MST)
In case this wasn't forwarded to macgifts after I sent it to comments,
I'm resending...
Our previous memory management utility, HeapIt, introduced MP
Classic users to a new way to free up more of their heap space. They
could install more packages, use more applications, and even back up
their MessagePads when they couldn't before.
ICS is proud to announce NewtCase, our latest memory management
utility for the Newton. NewtCase lets any MessagePad (Classic, MP100,
MP110) user archive his/her Newton applications to reduce heap memory
requirements, alleviate conflicts between applications, and clean up
his/her Extras drawer. Archived (or "NewtCased") applications do not
show up in the Extras drawer, but can be reinstalled at any time using
NewtCase.
With NewtCase, you can temporarily deinstall applications without
having to remove them from your MessagePad. You could even keep a
hundred applications on your 4 meg card without overflowing your heap
space or Extras drawer.
NewtCase will be available by June 1st on CompuServe (GO NEWTON),
America Online (GO PDA), the comp.binaries.newton newsgroup, and the major
Newton ftp sites. If you cannot locate a copy, you can have one e-mailed
to you. Send all requests to ics@indirect.com.

Password v1
Another fine product from Avarice Software
Password is a small utility for quickly turning on an off password
protection on the Newton. Its icon in the extras drawer indicates
whether password protection is currently turned on or off. Click on
its icon to toggle the state.
The built-in way of turning on/off password protection is somewhat
cumbersome, especially if you do it often. To turn off password
protection you use Prefs, enter your old password, and leave the
new password line blank. To turn password protection back on, you
return to Prefs and reenter your password.
Use of Password is free of charge. I encourage you to share it freely.

oAppleLink: engber
ofrom CompuServe: >INTERNET:engber@newton.apple.com
Known Bugs:
- If you turn on or off password protection using Prefs, Password's
icon will not reflect the new state until you tap on it. This is
because the current version of Prefs doesn't notify other apps
when it changes the system soup.
- Sometimes the icon will flicker briefly when it changes state. This
is only a cosmetic problem, it doesn't mean Password is having
trouble setting the state of password protection.

Date: Fri, 6 May 1994 00:43:29 +0100
--========================_3272452==_
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Rotterdam, The Netherlands, May 5, 1994 - Lunatech Research announced the
immediate release of the "PDA Package Downloader 1.5" for Apple Computer's
family of Newton and Macintosh products. The "PDA Package Downloader 1.5"
(PPD) is the follow-up to the successful "Newton Package Downloader 1.0"
(NPD).
The PPD is a simple utility which allows the user to download Newton
Packages or Newton Updates from a Macintosh into a Newton. PPD now supports
serial connections, as well as AppleTalk, between a Macintosh and a Newton.
Further, PPD offers "background listening" operation: it will remain in the
background, silently listening for connections initiated by the Newton.
Some features in short:
- Drag and Drop installing of Newton Packages and Newton Updates;
- Support for AppleTalk and serial connections;
- Works in the background;
- No need to activate, will listen for connections all the time;
- Requires a minimum of disk and memory space;
- Will run on any Macintosh equipped with System 7 (or higher);
- Documentation in a stand-alone application.
The "PDA Package Downloader 1.5" is $20 shareware for one user. This small
fee encourages us to continue the development of PPD and other affordable
shareware utilities for the Newton. PPD licenses are also available.
PPD 1.5 will be available shortly through the newton.uiowa.edu, sumex-aim,
umich archives, compuserve, applelink, and other online services.

< Overview >
Prefs Patcher is a small patch for the Newton MessagePad which
corrects what we consider an annoying user interface "feature." Namely,
that you have to click twice to exit the Prefs or Formulas rolls. When
you install Prefs Patcher, it replaces the close box in these rolls with
one that works PROPERLY, requiring only one click to close the roll. You
can still click on the overview button to get back to the overview. The
application also places a dual-function button on the notepad status bar
for one tap access to the Formulas and Prefs rolls.

< Overview >
SleepAid covers all aspects of power management on your Newton
(Classic, MP100, MP110 or German MP). It replaces the default "Sleep"
preferences allowing you to set two sleep times - one for battery and one
for AC. It lets you reboot or sleep your Newton even if some errant
application wants it to stay awake. And finally, it adds a SleepAidNow
corner for one tap sleep and a HeapStatus corner for an instant reading
of free heap space. SleepAid is not a radical change from the existing
interface. It adds functionality without complexity and implements sleep
the way it should have been in the first place. :-)
